Rose flowers are indigenous to ancient Persia and other parts of Asia Minor. Generally historians credit the Persians with the discovery of Rose Otto, and being the first major producers as far back as the 10th century.  Avicenna, the well-known Persian physician, is thought to have distilled the first Rose Otto.  Produced for use in his medical practice, it is quite possibly also the very first Essential Oil he discovered.  Merchants later brought rose bushes to Bulgaria and Turkey. Some historians claim the first rose oil was produced in India for the wedding festivities of Shah Jahan, renowned for building the Taj Mahal and Shalimar Gardens as a gift for his bride.  The ancient Egyptians and Hebrews most likely knew about the process of distillation well before his time.  A red rose is portrayed at the 4,000 year old palace at Knossos in Crete, and remnants of rose flowers have been discovered in Egyptian tombs.
